Your Skincare App Said What? The Truth About Ingredient Checkers

You're standing in the skincare aisle — or more likely, deep in a MECCA browse — and you spot a product you love. On a whim, you scan it through an ingredient checker app. Seconds later, your screen is a sea of red flags. Suddenly the moisturiser you've used for years feels like a biohazard.
But should you actually be worried? Or is your app doing more fearmongering than fact-checking?
Skincare ingredient checkers have exploded in popularity. From apps you can use mid-shop to online databases you can lose an hour in at home, these platforms promise to decode the ingredient lists on your products and tell you exactly what you're putting on your skin. And in theory? We love the idea.
For anyone with sensitive, reactive or acne-prone skin, having a tool that flags potentially triggering ingredients is genuinely useful. Knowledge is power — and understanding what's in your products is a worthy goal.
The problem is that most of these tools present information without context. And in skincare science, context is everything.
Not every ingredient is there to treat your skin
Before you run your favourite moisturiser through a checker, it helps to understand what you're actually looking at.
A skincare formula is a carefully constructed system. Every ingredient has a job — and not all of those jobs are glamorous. Beyond the active ingredients doing the visible work, a product also needs to:
Stay stable — without certain ingredients, formulas can separate, degrade or become ineffective long before they reach you
Feel good to use — texture matters, and the ingredients that give a product its silky, blendable finish are doing important work
Absorb properly — particularly when a product contains actives like vitamin C or retinol that need to penetrate the skin to be effective
Last longer — preservatives are essential. Without them, your products would grow mould and bacteria within days
Strip out the ingredients an app flags as suspicious and you might be left with something that separates in the bottle, sits on top of your skin and expires within a week. These ingredients exist for good reason.
What ingredient checkers don't tell you
Beyond what's in your product, there are two critical factors that most ingredient checkers overlook entirely.
The first is concentration. How much of an ingredient is actually in the formula matters enormously. As a guiding principle in toxicology: the dose makes the poison. An ingredient that raises concerns at high concentrations may be perfectly safe — and widely used — at the low concentrations found in most skincare products. An app that flags an ingredient without accounting for how much of it is present is giving you an incomplete picture at best.
The second is your skin type. A checker has no idea whether you have dry, oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin — and the ingredients that work beautifully for one person can be problematic for another. A one-size-fits-all rating system simply cannot account for this.
Who is actually behind these ratings?
Here's something most users don't think to ask: who built this checker, and what are they basing their ratings on?
Most ingredient checker apps and websites are not regulated by any health authority. That means there is no requirement for their information to come from consensus-driven, peer-reviewed sources — and no obligation to disclose how current their data is or how often it's reviewed. Some brands even build their own ingredient checkers, which raises an obvious question about whose interests are really being served.
When choosing a resource to trust, look for two things. First, check who is behind it — checkers built on input from dermatologists, toxicologists and cosmetic chemists are a far stronger foundation than those with anonymous or undisclosed authorship. Second, favour resources that focus on ingredients rather than pushing you towards particular brands or products.
The clean beauty connection
It's also worth naming something that sits just beneath the surface of many ingredient checker platforms: the clean beauty movement.
Clean beauty — broadly defined as products free from certain synthetic or chemical ingredients — is a multi-billion dollar trend. And while the desire for transparency in skincare is entirely reasonable, the movement has also generated a significant amount of misinformation.
Ingredients with long, complicated names are often flagged as dangerous simply because they sound unfamiliar. Safe, well-researched ingredients are labelled as toxic.
And consumers are steered away from effective, affordable products and towards premium 'clean' alternatives.
Ingredient checkers, whether intentionally or not, often amplify this narrative. To illustrate exactly how this plays out in practice - we decided to put one of the most popular checkers to the test.
Let's look at a real example
We downloaded Yuka — an app that scans the barcodes of food and cosmetic products and assigns each one an overall safety score out of 100. Individual ingredients are flagged using a traffic light system: green for risk-free, yellow for low risk, orange for moderate risk, and red for high risk.
One thing worth noting upfront: Yuka does not publicly disclose how their scores are calculated or what evidence their rating system is based upon — and it is not a system endorsed by any regulatory authority or professional health body. Their product library is impressive, covering over 12,600 ingredients, but a large database and a reliable one are not the same thing.
To put it to the test, we scanned a product our family uses every day — QV Skincare Skin Lotion Sensitive Skin. We chose this one because we all have sensitive skin prone to eczema, and it's a product we trust.
Yuka gave it a score of 7 out of 100. That's their lowest category: Bad.
The score that doesn't add up
Two ingredients were flagged as concerning — one rated high risk (red) and one rated moderate risk (orange).
Here's where things start to unravel.
According to Yuka's own website, any product containing a red-rated ingredient automatically receives a score below 25 out of 100 — regardless of how much of that ingredient is actually in the formula. Think about that for a moment. An ingredient that makes up 0.1% of a product is penalised the same way as one that makes up 50%.
In toxicology, there is a foundational principle that guides how we assess the safety of any substance: the dose makes the poison.
In other words, almost any ingredient can be harmful at a high enough concentration — and almost any ingredient can be safe at a low enough one. Yuka's scoring system ignores this entirely.
As for how our product went from 25 down to 7? We still don't know. Yuka doesn't explain it.
Propylparaben — red flag or red herring?
Propylparaben is a preservative from the paraben family — and it has had a rough few years in the court of public opinion. You've probably seen "paraben-free" splashed across product packaging. But what does the evidence actually say?
Parabens like propylparaben have been linked to endocrine disruption — meaning they may interfere with the body's hormonal system. This sounds alarming. But context matters enormously here.
The studies behind these claims tested propylparaben at 100% concentration on broken skin, or involved feeding high doses directly to rats. Neither scenario has anything to do with how this ingredient is actually used — typically at around 1% concentration, applied to the surface of intact skin, where absorption into the bloodstream is minimal.
Regulators including Australia's TGA and Europe's SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) have assessed parabens and consider them safe at the concentrations used in cosmetic products.
Paula's Choice — another widely used ingredient checker — rates propylparaben as Good.
Same ingredient. Very different verdict.
Petrolatum — misunderstood and mislabelled
Yuka flags petrolatum as moderate risk, warning that it has potential carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and genotoxic (DNA-damaging) properties.
This is misleading — and more than a little alarming given that petrolatum is the primary ingredient in Vaseline and is found in countless everyday moisturisers and lip balms.
Here's what Yuka leaves out: petrolatum is not the same as petroleum (crude oil). Petrolatum — or petroleum jelly — is a highly refined, purified derivative of petroleum that has been used safely in skincare for over 150 years. The carcinogenic concerns relate to impure or unrefined forms of petrolatum, which are not used in cosmetic-grade products. Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is tightly regulated and considered safe by health authorities worldwide.

Two ingredient checkers. The same ingredient. Completely opposite conclusions.
So what does this tell us?
Apps like Yuka can be a useful starting point — but as this example shows, a low score does not automatically mean a dangerous product.
When an app penalises an ingredient without accounting for its concentration, cherry-picks studies that don't reflect real-world use, or fails to disclose how its scores are calculated, it stops being a health tool and starts being a source of unnecessary fear.
Your skincare products deserve more than a traffic light.
How to use ingredient checkers without being misled
Ingredient checkers are not the enemy. Used thoughtfully, they can be a genuinely helpful starting point for understanding what's in your products. The problem arises when they are treated as the final word — because they rarely are.
Here are five things to keep in mind every time you use one:
1. Ask who is behind it Look for checkers built on input from qualified professionals — dermatologists, toxicologists and cosmetic chemists. If the authorship is anonymous or unclear, treat the information with caution. As a starting point, resources like Paula's Choice Ingredient Dictionary and the EWG Skin Deep Database are widely used, though even these should be read critically and cross-referenced where possible.
2. Remember that concentration matters A flagged ingredient is not automatically a dangerous one. Always ask how much of that ingredient is likely to be in the formula. Ingredients typically listed towards the end of an ingredient list are present in very small amounts — often less than 1% — and are unlikely to pose any meaningful risk.
3. Consider your own skin No checker can account for your individual skin type, sensitivities or health history. An ingredient flagged as problematic for one person may be perfectly well tolerated by another. If you have specific skin concerns, a consultation with a dermatologist will always be more valuable than an app rating.
4. Be alert to commercial bias If a checker recommends specific products or brands alongside its ingredient ratings, ask yourself why. Some checkers are built by brands with products to sell. Favour resources that assess ingredients independently and don't direct you towards particular purchases.
5. Cross-reference before you act If an ingredient is flagged as concerning, don't make a decision based on one source alone. Check what regulators like the TGA or SCCS say. Look at how other independent resources rate the same ingredient. And remember — if the science genuinely supported the level of alarm being raised, regulators would have acted on it.
The goal was never to stop you reading labels — it's to make sure that when you do, you're reading them clearly.
